Many homeowners struggle with a bathroom that is dated and unattractive, by today’s modern standards. Complete bathroom remodels are not always within the budget but you can still get a more modern feel with a small project or two. Updating fixtures, giving your walls a fresh coat of paint, or adding a backsplash can really make your bathroom match your style better. Here are a few ways you can update your bathroom. If you are not the handiest person, you may want to see if your local handyman can spend a few hours at your home.

Swap out your old faucet for something more sleek and modern

Many people who live in homes built in the 1960s and 70s have shower heads that are small, worn-out, and old fashion. Replacing the shower head, tub spout and knobs is not terribly expensive and will make your shower look more vibrant. There are so many different styles and finishes available at your local hardware store or online. Do some research before you chose the one that works best for your family and fits your style.

Update your fixtures

Swapping out your curtain rod, towel bars and toilet paper holder for a more modern style are small but substantial improvements. Many older homes have gold fixtures or plastic towel bars. These may have been popular items in their day, but more than likely, they now make your bathroom look dated. For a more modern look, choose fixtures in chrome, brushed nickel or rubbed bronze.

Get out your paintbrush out

The quickest way to give your bathroom a new feel is to give it a new coat of paint. If your bathroom currently has wallpaper, this project will involve a little bit more than just picking out colors. Don’t paint over the wallpaper because it will make the wallpaper bubble and peel off. When you do pull off the wallpaper, you will need to dissolve the glue and sand it down before painting. Choose fresh, bright-colored paint for your walls and stick with a neutral for your ceiling. If you don’t want to go with something too bold, go with a bright neutral and accessorize with bright-colored towels as an accent.

Install a mosaic tile backsplash

Adding a mosaic tile backsplash may not work for every bathroom, but if you have the room and it won’t clash with any current wall tile, then this project is for you. Tile backsplashes are a great way to protect your walls from water and they are very popular in design right now. Adding one will make your bathroom look brand new.

Update your light fixtures

If you have a light over your medicine cabinet or one in the center of your bathroom ceiling, one of the easier ways to modernize your bathroom is to replace old light fixtures with new ones. There are many different styles of lights for a medicine cabinet or mirror. Take a look at your local hardware store to see what you can find. Make sure to measure first. Some lights don’t extend out very far off the wall and may be blocked by your current medicine cabinet.

Small projects that either you or your handy friend can complete will help update any old bathroom. Modernizing your bathroom doesn’t have to mean an expensive, stressful remodel. Complete your bathroom in parts. Your bank account and your nerves will be much happier. There are also many ceiling light options available. You will need to make sure that if you have a fan/light combination the new one has the same features.
